But, for teenagers who have dropped out of high school in the Los Angeles area, what are the options for going back to high school and earning a diploma?
The Los Angeles Acceleration Academies program, which begins June 12, 2024, provides academic support and credit recovery options for teens who dropped out of a Los Angeles Unified School District high school and want to take advantage of a flexible, personalized program. This allows students to go back to school in a non-traditional setting and earn their high school diploma.
If you want to go back to high school after dropping out, here are the five things you should know about Los Angeles Acceleration Academies.
What is Los Angeles Acceleration Academies?
Los Angeles Acceleration Academies works in partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to provide year-round credit recovery support to get teens back on track to earning their high school diploma.
How Does the Credit Recovery Program Work?
With Los Angeles Acceleration Academies (LAAA), students — also known as Graduation Candidates — are assigned a Graduation Candidate Advocate who supports their personal success. Specialized coaches also provide guidance and resources to help students prepare for their next step after graduating — whether that’s college, trade school, military service or the workforce.
Our unique approach meets each student where they are and provides them the support they need.
Students can choose from three LAUSD learning options:
-
In-person learning, on site at a LAUSD Continuation School
- Learning involves real-time interaction between live instructors and students, allowing for immediate communication, engagement, and collaboration
- Mandatory attendance is required five days/week
- Monday-Friday, 8:30am-2:30pm
- If students need additional live help, they can reach out to the Los Angeles Acceleration Academies content coaches for 1:1 tutoring and instruction.
- Two locations available: Whitney Young or Duke Ellington
- This option is available for students ages 16-18.
-
Virtual learning online, with instruction by a LAUSD teacher
- Learn your course material through an interactive online session with a live teacher, at set times of the day, 5 days per week.
- Monday-Friday, 8:30am-12:30pm
- If students need additional live help, they can reach out to the Los Angeles Acceleration Academies content coaches for 1:1 tutoring and instruction.
- This option is available for students ages 14-18.
-
Virtual learning on a flexible schedule
- Online learning materials and activities so students can engage on flexible days/times, without real-time interaction with the course instructor or classmates.
- If students need additional live help, they can reach out to the Los Angeles Acceleration Academies content coaches for 1:1 tutoring and instruction.
- Schedule can flex around your needs, but students must complete coursework on a regular basis and progress in their courses at an acceptable pace.
- This option is available for students ages 14-18.
For students starting in Summer 2024, we will administer and support online credit recovery courses. Students who begin our program in early June will have the opportunity to complete 1-2 courses before the end of the summer!
