Bethel Acceleration Academies celebrated its newest group of graduates in a celebration of young learners who overcame all manner of challenges — including medical issues, work and family obligations and learning styles that don’t fit the traditional mold — to realize their dream of a high school diploma.

“I know this is a small ceremony, but make no mistake, this is a big moment in your lives and big moments do not come around often,” BAA Assistant Director and social studies coach Kevin Torres told the grads and a hall packed with family, friends, educators and leaders of the Bethel School District.

“Regardless of how long you were with us, this journey has been a long one for each of you … through twists and turns, obstacles, and whatever else life has thrown at you,” Torres said. “That means each of you have demonstrated some of the top qualities an individual can possess — endurance, patience, determination, and perhaps most importantly, the sheer will to never give up.

“All of you had the option to give up, drop out of school or get a GED. Instead, you aimed high and you hit the mark,” Torres continued. “I am proud of all of you. Thomas, I am proud of you. Starlyn. I am proud of you. Erika. I am proud of you. Brooke. I am proud of you. Piers. I am proud of you. Ashton. I am proud of you. Jaliyah. I am proud of you. Noah, I am proud of you. Robert, I am proud of you. Brandon, I am proud of you.

“As I said earlier, big moments don’t come often or easily in life. So enjoy this moment. Bask in what you’ve accomplished. You’ve earned it.”
