Looking out at members of the Spring 2024 graduating class of Gwinnett County Acceleration Academies (GCAA), Director Hashima Carothers urged them to draw on the resilience they showed in earning their diplomas as they move through adult life.
“Remember that the journey does not end here,” Carothers told the grads as their family members, friends and educators looked on. “Embrace the challenges that lie ahead with confidence and courage, knowing that you have the knowledge and resilience to overcome any obstacle.”
The grads each brought their own story of pushing through barriers and embracing the opportunities offered by GCAA through its partnership with Gwinnett County Public Schools. Grad Naomi Jacques delivered the keynote speech, expressing gratitude for the personalized, accelerated path that allowed her to graduate ahead of schedule.
“Like many of you, traditional high school was not the right fit for me,” Naomi said. “Coming from Canada, I struggled with the pacing in school. I loved learning and have always been an overachiever … Traditional high school was confining. I felt like I was stuck in a box and not able to reach my full potential.”
While researching online programs to finish her studies, her father discovered GCAA, which offers a hybrid of in-person and remote learning. “For me, what set Acceleration Academies apart was the flexible scheduling and one-on-one support.
“It completely changed my perspective on schooling. Each day, I was able to grab a seat and do my work comfortably at my own pace. Because of the flexible scheduling, I learned how to manage my time. I was able to work part-time and also get my dental assistant certification, which is one step forward in my end career goal of becoming a dentist.”
Naomi thanked her family, including her parents. “Thank you for always supporting my dreams and making it known that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to,” she said. “Thank you for picking me up from every early morning practice, rehearsal or event, and driving me here to school each day. You're my heroes and have taught me so much.”
She expressed gratitude for the coaches and advocates at GCAA, singling out graduation candidate advocate English coach Morris Bevily, career coach Janae Herrington, graduation candidate advocate Jamaal Hickman, ESE coach Stacy Poteat and science coach Alisa TenHoopen.
“I'm beyond thankful,” she said, “for the amazing staff at this school who have always had student success in mind.”
