March 2, 2026 | Hali Schaefer
Julio Ortiz Ríos, Ed.D., joined the Lee County Acceleration Academies team in Fort Myers, Fl., in February as academy director, bringing more than a decade of experience to the role. Get to know more about his background, leadership journey and heart for students in this Q&A.
Q: Tell us about your background in education.
I’ve spent more than a decade serving students and families across Puerto Rico and Florida as a teacher, instructional coach and school leader. I began in science and math classrooms before moving into instructional coaching and leadership roles, including case-based learning work with 3DE. Most recently, I served as assistant principal for the OCPS Charter Schools System. Each step in my journey has strengthened my belief that relationships and high expectations change lives.
Q: What inspired you to pursue educational leadership?
I’ve always believed schools can be powerful spaces of opportunity and belonging. Pursuing my Ed.D. in educational leadership helped me expand my impact beyond the classroom and focus on building systems that support both educators and students. Leadership, to me, is about service — removing barriers and creating pathways for success.
Q: What do you value most in a school community?
Equity, empathy and meaningful human connection. Students thrive when they feel seen, heard and supported. I’m passionate about strengthening academic programs while ensuring every learner knows they matter.
Q: What excites you most about leading Lee County Acceleration Academies?
The Acceleration Academies mission is built around meeting students where they are. I’m excited to partner with families, staff and community members to continue building a culture where learners feel empowered to finish strong and define their own future.
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
I’m trilingual, which has allowed me to connect with students and families from many backgrounds. I’m also a Doctor of Chiropractic. And, I’m deeply committed to lifelong learning — always growing, just like the students we serve.
